Slow Down
Difference Between Stress and Burnout:
- Stress is generally short-lived and related to a temporary project or event. (Presentation, test, problem, new job, move)
- Burnout is chronic stress that feels never-ending.
1. We run ourselves into the ground.
1 Kings 19:3
Elijah was afraid and ran for his life…
2. We try to do it all on our own.
1 Kings 19:3
When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there.
3. We dwell on the negative.
1 Kings 19:4
“Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”
Exodus 20:8-11
“Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 You have six days each week for your ordinary work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the LORD your God. On that day no one in your household may do any work. This includes you, your sons and daughters, your male and female servants, your livestock, and any foreigners living among you. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy.
1. Practicing Sabbath is physically healthy.
2. Practicing Sabbath is mentally healthy.
Matthew 6:25-33
“That is why I tell you don’t be anxious about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are? 27 Can being anxious add a single moment to your life?
28 “And why be anxious about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?
31 “So don’t be anxious about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
3. Practicing Sabbath is spiritually healthy.
“You have made us for yourself, Oh Lord, and we will be restless until we rest in you.” – St. Augustine
The more we learn to say ‘no’ to what doesn’t matter, the more space we create for what truly does.
Matthew 11:28-30 MSG
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
