Message Notes

Ephesians 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”

THREE PHASES:

1. Training (childhood)

Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.

Proverbs 23:13-14
Don’t be afraid to correct your young ones; a spanking won’t kill them. A good spanking, in fact, might save them from something worse than death.

Proverbs 13:24
Those who spare the rod of discipline hate their children. Those who love their children care enough to discipline them.

Three thoughts on discipline if you are in this phase:

1. Be clear

2. Be convincing

3. Be consistant

4. Be compassionate

2. Teaching (adolescence)

Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord.

Deuteronomy 4:9
Teach what you’ve seen and heard to your children and grandchildren.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7
“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children.”

Luke 2:42
When Jesus was twelve years old, they attended the festival as usual.

Luke 2:46
Three days later they finally discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers, listening to them and asking questions

3. Trusting (adulthood)

Giving advice doesn’t mean they have to take it.
