Because your mouth doesn’t create what’s inside of you…it reveals it.

James 3:2-12
For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

For we all stumble in many things…

Truth #1: Your Tongue Reveals Who’s Really in Charge.

James 3:2-5
For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body. 3 If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. 4 Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5 So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things.

Your tongue always reveals who is sitting on the throne of your heart.

Your mouth simply becomes the microphone for whatever already lives inside.

Pressure doesn’t create what’s inside you. Pressure reveals it.

Your mouth eventually introduces your King.

Truth #2: Tongue Can Leave a Trail of Destruction

James 3:5–10
So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.

Every conversation is building something … or burning something.

You never know how heavy your words are until someone else has to carry them.

This isn’t really about speech. It’s about witness.

Truth #3: Your Tongue Is Guided by the King of Your Heart

James 3:8–12
But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 12 Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? 

The problem is the heart that’s driving it.

The tongue is simply announcing whoever sits on the throne.

James 3:11
Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? 

He didn’t come merely to clean up our language. He came to give us a new heart.

Only Jesus can change your tongue because only Jesus can change your heart.

Because eventually…your mouth introduces your King.
